When Colt asked if I could take Renee to see a college in Philadelphia, I couldn’t help but be happy at the idea of another weekend alone with her. Part of me feels like I’m betraying Colt’s trust by sleeping with Renee, but the other part of me wants her too damn much.

If I’m completely honest with myself, it’s not just the sex that I’m looking forward to this weekend. Waking up to a woman is something I haven’t experienced in a long time, and seeing Renee lying next to me last weekend was perfection. Talking with her and laughing together… it was all special because she’s not just some random girl I’ve picked up.

It’s Renee Linwood… someone I’ve always cared deeply for and someone I will always care for in the future, no matter what happens.

When Monday rolled around after last weekend, I had to go back to my real life. The life where I’m a middle-aged man who runs my own business and never makes time for romance… to the life where I would never deflower my best friend’s little girl. But I can’t possibly regret that, not when it seems Renee wanted it as badly as I did.

Every day since our weekend away, all I can think about is calling Renee or texting her, but I didn’t do it. What if Colt checks her phone to make sure she’s not getting in any kind of trouble? I know I would probably spy on her if I were her father, especially while she was dating that Billy character. And I’m too paranoid to risk us getting caught. Both of us have a lot to lose if Colt finds out.

With Colt too busy with work to take Renee to these college tours, he makes it too easy for us, and I’m grateful for that, no matter the level of guilt that sits in my gut over it.

Waking up this morning, my body feels weightless as I get out of bed, knowing it’s Saturday and that I get to take Renee away from this small town again to a place where we can be alone together.

I arrive at Colt’s place just as he’s heading out the door.

“Hey, Kane,” he smiles. “Thanks again for stepping in for me, buddy.”

“Stop thanking me. You know I’d do anything for you and that girl,” I assure him.

Colt claps me on the back.

“What would I do without you?”

“I really don’t know,” I joke. “Hey, does this college have any art programs?”

“Uh, I doubt it. Renee can do that stuff as a hobby or as a side business. She needs a real degree, you know?” Colt says. “Listen, I have to go. My first house showing is in twenty minutes. Go ahead inside. Renee should be almost ready.”

Colt rushes off, and I sigh. Now I know why Renee feels like she can’t speak up about what she really wants to do. Heading into the house, I call out to Renee.

“Rey, I’m here!” I jog upstairs and knock softly on her door, which is partially open.
